How is Coaching Different from Therapy, Mentoring or Advice from a Wise Friend?

One of the questions I hear most often is:

“Why would I need a coach when I can talk to a therapist, ask a mentor, or phone a good friend?”

The truth is, each serves a valuable purpose—but they are not the same.

Therapy

Therapy often focuses on healing the past. It provides a safe space to process trauma, grief, anxiety, depression, or other emotional and psychological challenges.

A therapist helps you understand why you feel the way you do and supports your healing journey.

If you’re carrying emotional wounds that need healing, therapy can be life-changing.

Mentoring

A mentor shares wisdom from their own experience.

They’ve walked a path before you and can guide you by saying, “Here’s what worked for me.”

Mentors are invaluable when you’re learning a new skill, building a career, or navigating a specific industry.

Advice from a Wise Friend

We all need those people.

A wise friend listens, encourages, celebrates our wins, and reminds us who we are when we’ve forgotten.

Sometimes, a coffee and an honest conversation are exactly what the heart needs.

Coaching

Coaching is different.

A coach doesn’t tell you what to do or solve your problems for you.

Instead, a coach asks powerful questions that help you uncover your own answers, challenge limiting beliefs, clarify your goals, and create a practical plan to move forward.

The focus isn’t on fixing you—because you’re not broken.

The focus is on helping you become more intentional, confident, and aligned with the life you want to create.

A coach is your thinking partner, your accountability partner, and sometimes the person who gently asks the question you’ve been avoiding.

Which One Do You Need?

Sometimes the answer is therapy.

Sometimes it’s a mentor.

Sometimes it’s dinner with your best friend.

And sometimes it’s coaching.

There is no hierarchy—only different tools for different seasons of life.

The important question isn’t “Which one is best?”

It’s “What do I need right now?”

When you choose the support that fits your current season, growth becomes much more intentional—and much more sustainable.
